Outline
Lieutenants told Collins to get the water, because they were all thirsty
Collins doesn’t know if it is dangerous, or why he should get the water
He gets the water anyway
The well is being heavily bombarded
Collins comes back and all of the water has spilled out
Although being fearless, Collins was unsuccessful in retrieving the water, and saving the dying officer (even though Collins went back for him)
Collins was conforming to the lieutenants’ ideas
Prevented him from being a hero
Would have been a hero if:
Had followed his conscience and saved the dying officer
Also, he wouldn’t have spilled all of the water if he had saved the officer
